Ice-o-lator, Bubble Hash CBD: What Is It?

Ice-o-lator (or bubble hash) is a hemp concentrate obtained by ice water extraction with no chemical solvents. Trichomes are separated from the flower by cold, filtered through micron screens and then dried to form a CBD-rich concentrate (THC < 0.3%). The result is a hash with a sandy to creamy texture, with fresh, fruity and floral aromas, reserved exclusively for adults (18+). Here is everything you need to know.

01

What Is Ice-o-lator?

Ice-o-lator is an extraction technique that uses ice water to detach trichomes — the small resinous structures — from the hemp plant. The term «bubble hash» describes the same process: bubble bags are micron screens (from 25 µm to 220 µm) that filter trichomes by size.

Unlike butane or ethanol extractions, ice-o-lator uses no chemical solvents. Water and ice are the only extraction agents, which has earned it a reputation as a clean process.

The plant material — hemp flowers or leaves (cannabis sativa L.) with THC < 0.3% — is placed in a bucket of ice water and agitated. The cold makes the trichomes brittle; they detach, fall to the bottom and are collected layer by layer through the screens.

  • No chemical solvents: water and ice only
  • Micron filtration: multiple quality grades
  • Final product: compacted powder, sandy to creamy texture
  • THC < 0.3% — legal hemp (cannabis sativa L.)
  • Reserved exclusively for adults (18+)

Extraction Process Step by Step

The production of ice-o-lator follows several precise steps to ensure the quality of the final product.

First step: the plant material (CBD hemp flowers) is frozen for several hours to make the trichomes brittle. It is then mixed with ice water and ice cubes in a bucket and agitated for 15–20 minutes.

Second step: the mixture is poured over a stack of nested bubble bags, each corresponding to a different micronage (from 220 µm at the top to 25 µm at the bottom). The trichomes pass through the screens and settle by size.

Third step: the hash collected in each bag is gently pressed to remove excess water, then dried in cool air (freeze-drying or slow drying). Incomplete drying is the main cause of mould.

  • Agitation in ice water: 15–20 minutes
  • Multi-screen filtration: from 220 µm to 25 µm
  • Collection by grade (25–45 µm = premium quality)
  • Cool air drying or freeze-drying

Comparison of CBD Hash Types

There are several CBD hash families, each with its own extraction technique, texture and aromatic profile.

How to Consume CBD Hash?

CBD hash can be consumed in different ways, in compliance with regulations and without combustion.

The recommended method is vaporisation: a convection or conduction vaporiser allows the hash to be heated to the ideal temperature (between 160 °C and 185 °C) to release the aromas without combustion. This is the cleanest way to appreciate its olfactory profile.

It is also possible to crumble it into neutral hemp (CBD, THC < 0.3%) for use in a pipe or desktop vaporiser. Direct combustion is not recommended as it degrades a large part of the aromas.

  • Vaporisation: preferred method, aromas preserved
  • Crumbled into neutral hemp for pipe or vaporiser
  • Avoid direct combustion: degrades aromas
  • Always reserved exclusively for adults (18+)

Ice-o-lator CBD: Legality in France

In France, CBD hash (ice-o-lator, bubble hash, pollen) is legal as long as the THC content is below 0.3% in the final product, in accordance with the decree of 22 January 2022 and the Council of State decision of 29 December 2021.

These products are manufactured from authorised cannabis sativa L., grown in the European Union with certified seeds. They do not contain THC in a quantity sufficient to produce a psychoactive effect.

Sale and possession are authorised for adults (18+). Consumption in public places is subject to the general rules in force.

Questions fréquentes

What is ice-o-lator?

Ice-o-lator is a CBD hash obtained by ice water extraction without solvents. The trichomes of the hemp flower are separated by cold, filtered through micron screens and then dried. The result is a sandy to creamy concentrate, rich in CBD (THC < 0.3%), with fresh and fruity aromas.

What is the difference between bubble hash and pollen?

Bubble hash (ice-o-lator) is extracted in ice water: the texture is creamier and the aromas are fresher and fruitier. Pollen (dry sift) is obtained by dry sieving: the texture is powdery and the aromas are softer and more herby. Both are solvent-free CBD concentrates.

How to consume CBD hash?

The recommended method is vaporisation at 160–185 °C to preserve the aromas. It can also be crumbled into neutral hemp for a pipe or vaporiser. Always reserved exclusively for adults (18+).

Is CBD hash legal in France?

Yes, CBD hash (ice-o-lator, pollen, charas) is legal in France as long as the THC content is below 0.3% in the final product. It must be manufactured from authorised cannabis sativa L. Reserved exclusively for adults (18+).

What is the best grade of ice-o-lator?

Grades 25–45 µm are considered premium as they concentrate the smallest and most aromatic trichomes. Higher grades (73–120 µm) are more abundant but less resin-concentrated.

Does ice-o-lator have more CBD than the flower?

Generally yes: the extraction concentrates the trichomes that contain the majority of cannabinoids, including CBD. The CBD content of an ice-o-lator is typically higher than that of the source flower, while remaining within the THC limit of < 0.3%.
